Description

The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve is a 47-acre archaeological and nature preserve in north Phoenix, home to more than 1,500 petroglyphs carved into over 500 basalt boulders by Hohokam, Patayan, and Western Archaic traditions between 500 and 5,000 years ago. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the preserve protects the Hedgpeth Hills petroglyph site and provides meaningful public access to one of the region’s most significant archaeological and cultural landscapes. Our mission is to preserve and protect the site for future generations while honoring and sharing the cultural heritage through education, research, exhibitions, and conservation. Guided by our core values of Preservation, Connection, and Respect, we prioritize safeguarding the petroglyphs and the surrounding landscape, fostering connections between past and present, and honoring the many perspectives and interpretations that give this place meaning. Operated by Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, the preserve and museum invite visitors to explore, learn, and engage with the deep cultural history of the Sonoran Desert in a spirit of stewardship and shared understanding.
