Fanny Hicks is a visual artist and baker whose work lives at the intersection of fi ne art, craft, and food. Like many artistic children of the 1990s, she grew up dreaming of becoming a Disney artist, spending countless hours drawing the Little Mermaid and imagining a creative life. She went on to study illustration at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, where she honed her technical skills and deepened her love of image-making. After college however, she found the illustration world difficult to enter—particularly while working more than full time to support herself. At the same time, a long-standing passion began to take center stage. Hicks had been decorating cakes since her early teens and regularly competed in her county fair, earning blue ribbons for her work. While attending college, Hicks found work in several bakeries, and when traditional illustration felt increasingly out of reach she redirected her creative energy fully into baking. Though painting took a back seat, her artistic practice never disappeared; it simply shifted mediums. When she did make art it was often paintings of the pastries she had created, reflecting how deeply her time in kitchens continued to inform her visual work. Though she had sculptural training, butter sculpting had never crossed her mind until she was invited to create a giant edible butter cow for Hayden Mills first annual Breadfest. The project became an unexpected and joyful convergence of her artistic worlds. Hicks continues to seek opportunities to create work that blurs the line between food and fine art. This lecture explores an unconventional creative path, from childhood dreams of painting and illustration to professional kitchens and, eventually, sculpting a giant edible cow out of butter. Fanny Hicks shares how her formal art training, years of cake decorating, and experience working as a baker unexpectedly converged in a single project that challenged traditional distinctions between fine art and craft. Through personal storytelling and visual examples, Hicks examines how creative skills migrate across mediums, how making a living can reshape an artistic practice, and why food can be a powerful—and playful—art material. The talk invites audiences to reconsider where art “belongs,” and how curiosity, adaptability, and craftsmanship can lead to surprising creative outcomes—even when butter is involved.

Visit our FAQsBela Fidel is a mixed media artist working in Arizona. Bela’s body of work is informed by her experiences shaped by having lived in three different countries and her exposure to their culture and outlook on life. This can be felt in the rich layering and texturing of her abstract work in oils, encaustics and mixed media. Bela is also passionate about animals, both domestic and wild. Her love and compassion for all sentient creatures led her to create a series in oils, “Endangered, Threatened and Exploited Species”, with an aim to raising people’s awareness about the plight of these animals. Bela has been showing her work for many decades at a variety of art venues, both in Los Angeles and in Arizona. Throughout the years she has been the recipient of prizes, commendations and media publicity. Bela strives to continue to distill her truest personal expression through constant exploration, venturing into new territories while staying true to her fidelity to elegant aesthetics. Bela’s intention and drive are to express both the passion of drama and the softness of poetry. These are expressed with contrasts of raw brushstrokes versus smooth and polished; of soft and quiet passages versus a dash of drama. While she aims at expressing her Being in paint, these characteristics are universal and are found in all of us: in the richness and layers of our emotions; in the drama and poetry of the everyday; in the quiet corners of our hearts that come alive with the slightest dash of hope and joy.

Hello my name is Blake I was born in 1980 in Hawaiian Gardens California but I was raised in Morongo basin area of California. I believe the slow paced small town desert lifestyle drew me to creating, even at an early age where my interests were model cars and drawing. I moved to the west valley in Arizona in late 2016 to be closer to family, and I got back into drawing and painting around 2018 where I tried to practice daily and when I could. I have always worked full time jobs as well ranging from auto tech, building maintenance, and sales so art has always been part time. I would love to make art full time and intend to in the future. My style and inspirations vary because I have too many to list.

A project for innovation, creativity, and sustainability in the West Valley! Building a sustainable art scene by creating an art resource center to serve artists, teacher, nonprofits, and creators in Arizona.
Every project has it's final touches; the last dot of paint on a canvas, the period at the end of a sentence. The Dot. exists to make sure every creator has the ability to affordably and sustainably source their "Dot." Our organization's long term goals include creating a Creative Reuse Center in Surprise that functions like an art thrift store. Creators, artists, teachers, theatres, and nonprofits can drop off and pick up left over supplies for free or a small donation. Not only does this promote recycling and sustainability, but creativity with unique and repurposed supplies. We are currently seeking a location to operate the resource center out of. If you or someone you know is interested in being a part of this project, please reach out!
