Artist Statement
My work explores the tension between observation and imagination, tracing a path from my early abstract expressionist roots to my current surrealist practice. As an undergraduate, I gravitated toward figurative forms built with thick, tactile layers of paint, bold color relationships, and intentional lighting—drawing influence from Picasso, Matisse, and Hopper. These works captured the physicality of painting and the immediacy of emotion.
Today, my art inhabits a more internal landscape. Through surrealist imagery, I merge conscious experience with subconscious associations to create visual narratives that echo dreams, memory, and emotional states. My drawings and paintings use symbolism and metaphor to explore themes of mental health, identity, and the fluidity of personal reality. Artists such as Chagall, Kahlo, and Kern-Larsen continue to inform the lyrical and intuitive qualities of my work.
Ultimately, I aim to create spaces where viewers can recognize their own inner worlds—where the familiar and the fantastical coexist, inviting reflection, curiosity, and emotional resonance.
